A four-car pileup along Interstate 94 near Albertville killed one person and injured four others among the eight people involved, authorities said.

The crash on eastbound I-94 occurred about 1:30 p.m. Saturday near the exit to the Albertville Premium Outlets, according to the State Patrol. It was triggered by a rear-end collision involving slowing traffic.

Killed was a passenger in a Hyundai Elantra, identified as Erin L. Bateman, 38, of Manitoba. Bateman was the only person not wearing a seat belt among the eight people in the four cars, the patrol said.

A 10-year-old girl, Elizabeth K. Sabourin, also of Manitoba, was seriously hurt and taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, the patrol said.

Surviving their injuries were Bateman's father, Douglas N. Bateman, 63, of Winnipeg, and his wife, Frieda Bateman, 62.

Of those in the other three vehicles, three escaped injury and one suffered noncritical injuries. Those four are all from Minnesota.
