NEW YORK — Three men arrested in Montenegro have been charged in a New York court with conspiring to kill Americans and aid terrorists and have been labeled by prosecutors as international arms traffickers.
The men were swept up in a sting operation. Their arrests were announced Wednesday.
Prosecutors say Cristian Vintila, Massimo Romagnoli and Virgil Flaviu Georgescu conspired to sell large quantities of military-grade weaponry to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known as FARC.
The U.S. government says Vintila and Georgescu were arrested Monday in Podgorica, Montenegro. Romagnoli was arrested Tuesday. Authorities say the men were unaware they'd been dealing with Drug Enforcement Administration confidential sources.
The men each could face life in prison if convicted. They're in custody in Montenegro and can't be reached for comment.
