A freight train hit a car in western Minnesota, and three of the four people in the vehicle were hospitalized with serious injuries, authorities said.

The collision occurred about 3:25 p.m. Saturday northwest of Perham at Hwy. 10 and 460th Street, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office.

The BNSF Railway train was carrying various freight as it headed east, said rail spokeswoman Amy McBeth. No one on the train was hurt, she said.

The three who were injured, an adult and two children, were taken to a nearby hospital and transported by air ambulance to medical facilities in Fargo.

Authorities have not identified the victims or their relationship to one another. Emergency dispatch audio said the children were 8 and 12 years old.

No other details about the crash have been released. The rural crossing has stop signs and crossbuck markers but no crossing arms.
