A sport-utility vehicle occupied by four teenage boys hit a stopped semitrailer truck from behind Monday afternoon on Interstate 94 east of Hudson, Wis., killing two of four in the smaller vehicle, authorities said.
The crash happened about 6 miles from the Minnesota state line about 1:20 p.m., when the eastbound semi came to a stop in a construction zone and the trailing SUV failed to do the same, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.
All eastbound traffic was redirected off the interstate and around the scene for about two hours until the victims could be removed and the road cleared, the patrol added.
All of the teens were from New Richmond, Wis., the patrol said.
The driver, 17, was critically injured. His 17-year-old front-seat passenger was killed, as was a 16-year-old in the back seat. The fourth occupant, a 17-year-old also seated in the back, suffered minor injuries.
The 16-year-old who died was not wearing a seat belt, the patrol said. The other three were belted in.
The truck's driver, Paul A. Davis 34, of Cadott, Wis., was not injured.
The victims' identities were being withheld pending notification of family.
