In a span of a few hours and 10 or so miles, two vehicles ran off the road Friday morning on the North Shore, leaving both drivers dead, authorities said.

In the first crash, a pickup truck on County Road 3 north of Two Harbors "overshot [the] T intersection" with Hwy. 61 about 7:30 a.m., rolled down an embankment and landed in Lake Superior, according to the State Patrol. Saturday, the patrol identified the driver as Sarah E. Jaeger, 58, of Two Harbors.

The pickup came to rest in about 4 feet of water, with its wheels up. A dog in the pickup also was killed, Lake County Sheriff Carey G. Johnson said.

About 10 a.m. and several miles south of Two Harbors, a car lost control on the wet highway, went down an embankment and struck a tree, the patrol said. The driver, 26-year-old Darrin J. Theis of Duluth, was killed in the crash.
