SHEBOYGAN, Wis. — Jury selection was scheduled to begin Friday in Sheboygan for a 14-year-old boy accused of participating in the slaying of his friend's great-grandmother.
Nathan Paape and Antonio Barbeau were both charged as adults with first-degree intentional homicide in the September slaying of Barbeau's great-grandmother.
Authorities have said the boys, then both 13, used a hammer and a hatchet to kill 78-year-old Barbara Olson at her home on Sept. 17 before stealing her money.
Barbeau pleaded no contest earlier this month to a charge of first-degree homicide in deal that calls for prosecutors to recommend he be eligible for parole in 35 years. The judge is not bound by that deal when he sentences Barbeau on Aug. 12.
Paape faces life in prison and a minimum 20 years behind bars if convicted on the same charge. He can't be sentenced to life in prison with no parole because of his age, Sheboygan Press Media reported (http://shebpr.es/150bnaE ).
Sheboygan County Circuit Court Judge Timothy Van Akkeren on Wednesday denied prosecutors' request to reconsider a decision barring testimony about the teens using some of the money they stole to buy pizza and marijuana the day after the slaying. The judge said the testimony was of limited value and could prejudice jurors.
