12 killed in deadly holiday weekend on Minnesota roads

Three people remain critically injured after crashes that took 12 lives in the state Saturday and Sunday. No fatal accidents were reported as of Monday evening.

At least three people, including a 2-year-old boy, remained hospitalized late Monday with critical injuries following a string of Memorial Day weekend accidents that killed 12 people on Minnesota roads.

The fatal accidents occurred Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Minnesota State Patrol spokesman Lt. Matt Langer said Monday evening, adding that based on reports at 8 p.m., Memorial Day itself was free of fatal crashes.

Rita Seha, 43, and Carter Newell, 2, both of Rochester, Minn., were critically injured late Saturday when the minivan they were in was broadsided in Olmsted County by a driver who had been drinking, Langer said. Four people in the van died.

St. Marys Hospital in Rochester said Seha remained in critical condition late Monday, but would not give out any information about Carter.

Meanwhile, John Hubers, 51, of Oak Grove, Minn., was in critical condition at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale. His wife, Judy Hubers, 59, was killed Saturday night in a crash on Hwy. 371 in Cass County. A car traveling north on Hwy. 371 braked to avoid hitting another vehicle, swerved into the southbound lane and crashed head-on into the Hubers' motorcycle.

In the Olmsted County fatal crash, Christopher S. Frisch, 25, of Winona, was arrested on suspicion of criminal vehicular operation. He was not injured. Frisch was drunk, Langer said.

The van was headed north on Hwy. 63 when it was hit by Frisch's car, which was traveling east on Hwy. 30. Killed were driver Terry Milholland, 45, of Beecher, Ill., and passengers Heidi Newell, 19, and Jarah Beers, 23, both of Rochester, and Raymond Milholland, age and hometown unknown.
