A Woodbury man who held off police for more than 36 hours at a hotel on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis has been charged with kidnapping, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said Thursday.

Lincoln Bowman, 46, also was charged with false imprisonment in the standoff, which began at 11:30 p.m. Sunday and lasted until Tuesday afternoon. He will make his first court appearance Friday.

According to the criminal complaint, Minneapolis police received a call from another police department saying that Bowman, for whom there was an out-of-state warrant, was suicidal and threatening to harm family members.

Police went to the Graduate Hotel and learned that he was in a room with a woman, the complaint says. Bowman indicated that he was armed and threatened to hurt any officers who came through the door. He also said he would set the hotel on fire, the complaint says.

Police could hear the voice of a woman inside.

At 8:20 p.m. Monday, the woman was able to leave the room. Police fired tear gas, broke down the door and arrested the man.
