April 8, 2019 at 12:33AM

An unidentified driver struck a woman on a well-traveled road in Grand Forks early Sunday and fled, authorities said. She died shortly afterward.

The incident occurred just before 5 a.m. along Demers Avenue near Interstate 29, according to Police Sgt. Kristofer Brown.

A bystander was with the woman near an exit ramp to Demers as emergency personnel were responding to the scene, according to dispatch audio.

Officers attempted to resuscitate the woman as she was heading to a hospital in an ambulance, but she died while en route, Brown said.

The woman's identity has not been released.

The vehicle "would potentially have damage to the front bumper and hood," Brown said in a statement. Police did not release any identifying details about the vehicle.

Anyone with information about this case is urged to call police at 1-701-787-8000 or 911 in the Grand Forks area.
