Amy Y. Mullin had five children under the age of 7 in her car and a blood-alcohol content twice the legal limit when Burnsville police found her mid-morning Thursday at the scene of a two-car accident.

The other driver, who had his 5-year-old grandson in the back seat of his car, told officers that Mullin turned right in front of him at Evergreen Drive and Aston Circle in Burnsville. The accident scene is just more than a mile from Mullin's home.

The 30-year-old Burnsville woman has been charged with child endangerment, criminal vehicular operation and two counts of drunken driving, all gross misdemeanors. She has been released from custody and has another court appearance in January. A phone number for Mullin could not be found.

According to the complaint filed by the Dakota County attorney's office, an officer at the scene noticed that Mullin smelled like alcohol, had watery, bloodshot eyes and had a hard time following the conversation.

She initially told the officer she had four children in the car with her, ages 2, 4, 5 and 9 months. Then another adult came over to the cars with a fifth child, age 7.

Mullin admitted that the 7-year-old had been in the car, too, and that she lied because the 7-year-old and 5-year-old had been buckled together in the front seat.

The 7-year-old had suffered a bruised face, which was treated with an ice pack, the complaint said.

The complaint said the officer asked Mullin to recite the alphabet. She failed the first time, but succeeded when she tried again.

Mullin registered a 0.175 blood-alcohol content on a preliminary breath test and a 0.15 on a second test. The legal limit for driving is 0.08.
