Newest Timberwolf Sundiata Gaines participated in shootaround at Target Center this morning after signing wih the team and he'll be there backup to Sebastian Telfair at point guard tonight.

He makes no guarantees, however, about hitting a winning three-pointer at the buzzer.

"Wayne is out, so Gaines will be the guy," Kurt Rambis said, referring to injured shooting guard Wayne Ellington (bruised thigh) who can play some backup point in a pinch.

Gaines will be asked to step right in and learn new teammates and a complex new system instantly, at least until Luke Ridnour and/or Jonny Flynn get healthy.

"It's very difficult for any player to do that kind of thing," Rambis said. "But then again, a lot of players have come in and done very well in those circumstances."

Gaines is one of those guys.

Utah signed him last winter out of the D League and in one of his first NBA games, Gaines hit a dramatic three-point shot at the buzzer to beat LeBron James and the Cavs.

"He did that with Utah," Rambis said. "Hopefully, it won't come down to that tonight."

The Wolves waived Mo Ager Thursday to make room for Gaines, who emerged out of a four-player, point-guard tryout in Sacramento on Wednesday.

"He's just more of a traditional point guard," Rambis said of Gaines.
