Now that the Wolves have D League center Greg Smith on a 10-day audition, Sam Mitchell said he and GM Milt Newton are looking to fill their final roster spot with an athletic wing player.

He said they're looking for a guy -- likely in the D League but who, like Smith, has some NBA experience -- they can look at now and bring to training camp next fall with a legitimate chance to make the team.

"We have to improve our athleticism," Mitchell said after practice today and before the team flew to Milwaukee this afternoon for Friday night's game. "I don't think we're a bad athletic team, but we're not as athletic as we need to be. We need to at guys who can defend, a guy who can shoot and see how this team can look if we can spread the floor a little bit more....We want to play with pace, guys who can play with flow, guys with as high of a basketball IQ as we can find.

"If there are some guys in the D League who fit that bill, we need to look at it. Greg fits the bill from the standpoint of being a big guy who's physical. But we also need to look at guys who can make our team going forward."

Also after practice today: Karl-Anthony Towns is now 4-for-4 on Rookie of the Month honors after the NBA named him the West's top one for February. Indiana's Myles Turner won in the East.

Mitchell, of course, wouldn't name names, but a look at the top D League wing prospects include guys like former NBA players Jordan Hamilton, Devin Ebanks, Orlando Johnson and Vander Blue.

Mitchell said they'd sign a player who has been released by an NBA team recently, but most of those guys are hoping to sign on with a team bound for the playoffs.

An exception: Memphis on Wednesday waived 6-7 forward James Ennis after Monday's deadline to make him eligible for the playoffs.

"If the right guy is out there, then that's a conversation Milt and I need to have as far as bringing 'em in," Mitchell said. "But those guys right now are trying to latch on with playoff teams."

For now, Mitchell sounded like they're focusing on D League prospects to fill that 15th and final roster spot opened when they waived Kevin Martin Monday night.

Mitchell said he doesn't have time to scout for prospects, but said he watches D League game video of specific players identified by the team's scouting staff.
