MADISON, WIS. – Coming off an overtime victory on Friday that extended its winning streak to seven games, both coach Don Lucia and captain Justin Kloos said the Gophers men's hockey team had to do better on Saturday.

That didn't happen, and so that winning streak is no more.

Cameron Hughes, Tim Davison and Corbin McGuire scored goals within 5 minutes, 6 seconds of the second period, and Wisconsin beat the No. 7 Gophers 5-3 before an announced 14,868 at the Kohl Center, the Badgers' largest home crowd in nearly three years.

"You get what you earn," Lucia said after the Gophers' first loss since Dec. 3, when Ohio State won 8-3 at Mariucci Arena. "We didn't earn a win tonight."

The Gophers got goals from Ryan Norman, Mike Szmatula and Kloos, who scored the winner Friday. But it wasn't enough vs. the Badgers (11-8-1, 4-2 Big Ten), who got 32 saves from Matt Jurusik and wrested control after outshooting the Gophers 17-7 in the second period, ending Minnesota's longest winning streak since 2006-07.

Norman and Szmatula's goals 1:29 apart gave the Gophers (14-6-2, 6-2) a 2-1 lead late in the first period. That lasted until the 10:53 mark of the second, when Hughes stuffed in a wraparound off Will Johnson's miss to tie the score. Only 2:21 later, Davison's wrist shot eluded Eric Schierhorn's glove for the junior defenseman's first goal of the season.

With Ryan Collins in the penalty box, the Badgers won an offensive zone faceoff, and after opportunities by Jedd Soleway and Aidan Cavallini were blocked by Schierhorn, McGuire came in from the left point to blast a rebound in for a 4-2 lead at 15:59 of the period.

That goal ended a streak of 29 consecutive power-play kills for the Gophers, and Wisconsin tacked on another power-play goal 57 seconds into the third period, with Brent Frederic making it a three-goal lead. Kloos scored on the power play in the final minute, but it was too little, too late.

"The fans being here, we knew they were going to come back," first-year Badgers coach Tony Granato said.

Tyler Sheehy had two assists for the Gophers, giving him four points on the weekend and a Big Ten-high 32 for the season. Kloos has had a point in eight consecutive games.
