Oak Creek mayor wants city known for resilience, not for being site of Sikh temple shooting

MILWAUKEE — Oak Creek Mayor Stephen Scaffidi (skuh-FEE'-dee) says he wants his city to be known for its resilience, not for being the site of last year's shooting rampage at a Sikh (seek') temple.

He spoke Friday, three days before the anniversary of a gunman killing six worshippers. He says the Sikh community showed him how strong it could be in the face of adversity, and that's what he wants the nation to remember about Oak Creek.

He recalls meeting with survivors after the shooting, and someone asked him how he was coping. He says he was amazed that even when their community was suffering, the Sikhs were worried about him.

He says he's never been more impressed with any group of people, and that he was proud to call the Sikhs his friends.
