2014 Shannon Ridge Lake County Petite Sirah

For many, zinfandel is the go-to wine when it comes to pairing with zesty barbecued ribs or chicken. But a red more often associated with winter, petite sirah, often works splendidly with 'cue. Exhibit A: the 2014 Shannon Ridge Lake County Petite Sirah ($15). This purple tooth-stainer is big and grippy but refined, a paragon of the varietal. The lush fruit and firm but friendly tannins make for a fab mouthfeel and finish. Proprietor Clay Shannon is one of California's great characters, a hugely successful construction guy who says he switched to wine with this motto: "We don't have a plan, but we're sticking to it." Now he produces a line of wines that offer fabulous value. As noted, this robust red is a gem for grillers, but keep some around for winter roasts and braises.
