SETTING THE SCENE: Thanks to the steady breeze, it was a relatively cool morning in Mankato as the Vikings held their final full practice of training camp. The players were not in full pads. Maybe they forgot to have their morning coffee, but the practice lacked intensity, irking their coach.

WAKE UP: Twenty-five minutes into the practice, which had a 9 a.m. start, Mike Zimmer brought the practice to a halt. Frustrated because his team wasn't practicing with focus and energy, he made his players take a lap around the far goal-post and back. "Everybody," he barked. Fans in the bleachers gave a loud roar in approval, but Zimmer was far from pleased. After the sloppiness continued, the coach called practice 15 minutes early and had some choice words for the players being sending them inside.

THE NEED FOR SPEED: The Vikings were mixing and matching their units in practice, at times pitting the starting offense against the second- or third-team defenses. That's why wideout Mike Wallace found himself lined up across from cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke, another speedster. Van Dyke stayed stride-for-stride with Wallace as he ran a go route, but he couldn't get his head around to look for the ball as quarterback Teddy Bridgewater floated a perfect pass to Wallace, who made the long reception.

MAKING IT LOOK EASY: Bridgewater got schooled by safety Harrison Smith late in practice. Smith sat back in coverage, read the quarterback's eyes then casually pounced on a sideline throw to wide receiver Adam Thielen, who was running an out route. Smith had a strong training camp.

DOUBLE THE DROPS: Tight end Rhett Ellison typically has reliable hands, but he couldn't bring down a pair of high but catchable passes in stride. Later, Kyle Rudolph got into the act, dropping an on-target pass.

YANKEY RETURNS: Second-year offensive lineman David Yankey returned after sitting out a week of practice and the Hall of Fame Game with a leg injury. He lined up as the third-team right tackle. The only position on the line that the youngster has not manned during training camp is center.

CAMP CHATTER: "I lean on my size 10s." — Zimmer when asked if he leans on his veterans to self-police the players on a morning like today.

INJURY REPORT: Running back Adrian Peterson (thigh bruise) sat out practice for a second straight day. Joining him on the sideline were wide receiver Gavin Lutman (hamstring), defensive end Scott Crichton (leg), tight end Brandon Bostick (undisclosed) and nose tackle Shamar Stephen (knee). Cornerback Josh Robinson (pectoral) remains on the PUP list.
