For the U.S. General Accounting Office's study of prices hospitals pay for implantable medical devices, the GAO selected five specific devices used in the five procedures that rank highest in Medicare spending. They are:

•Total knee implants

•Total hip implants

•Coronary drug-coated stents

•Automated implantable cardioverter defibrillators

•Cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators
