What number are you?You are one of more than 7 billion people on Earth, the United Nations Population Fund says. Would you like to know what number you were when you were born?

The London-based British Broadcasting Corp. created an online calculator to tell you. (See it at www.startribune.com/a844.) The calculator takes your birthday, country and gender and spits stats including the exact number you are in the order of births in the history of the world and a world population counter. It can be shared through Facebook and Twitter.

The data are based on estimates by the UN Population Division and calculations provided by the UN Population Fund. The fund, which seeks to promote health and works with governments and other agencies, estimates the world's population has doubled since 1968. It is projected to exceed 9 billion by 2030. As the population grows, the fund says, it affects the environment and economy.

Part of the reason for the rapid population rise, the agency says, is lower mortality rates and longer life expectancy.

Poll: Social media harmfulSocial media are more harmful than helpful to America's young people, according to a new survey.

A majority of those responding to a nationwide telephone survey, 53 percent, said the pervasive use of social media among young people is hurting their social development, according to Poll Position, a nonpartisan news, polling and social media company.

Twenty percent said social media are helpful to young people's social development, 17 percent said they are not making a difference and 11 percent didn't offer an opinion. Among the men responding, 22 percent said social media are helpful, compared with 18 percent of women.

Survey respondents 18 to 29 found social media more harmful than helpful: 47 to 35 percent.

The survey of 1,200 registered voters was run Nov. 13 and has a margin of error of plus/minus 3 percent.
