For 90 years, Ingebretsen's, on the corner of 16th Avenue S. and E. Lake Street, has been the heart of the Twin Cities area's Scandinavian community, selling both food and an array of other goods. Now its story is told in "Ingebretsen's Saga: A Family, a Store, a Legacy of Food," by Anne Gillespie Lewis ($14.) It's history, but with lots of recipes, such as smoked whitefish spread, Swedish yellow pea soup and Sigurd's Skaarne Pepperkaker, plus some modern ideas for lefse. Local author N.M. Kelby's latest novel, "White Truffles in Winter" (Norton, $24.95), imagines the life of famed French chef Auguste Escoffier, his sensuous relationship with fiery actress Sarah Bernhardt and his abiding love for his wife, Delphine. Cake Boss live on stage
Buddy Valastro, who is TLC's "Cake Boss," is as much about theater as baking, so it makes sense that he's appearing Nov. 15 at the Orpheum Theater. His "Bakin' With the Boss Tour" is billed as an interactive event with some audience members invited onstage as he shares stories of his Italian upbringing and demonstrates cake-decorating techniques that have made him a star. His second cookbook, "Baking With the Cake Boss" (Free Press, $30), went on sale this month. Tickets range from $30 to $46 for the 7:30 show. Juicing the Lucy This month, the three 5-8 Clubs celebrate the Juicy Lucy, first served at the 5800 Cedar Av. location more than 50 years ago. Some highlights: Get $1 off your bill by donating a nonperishable food item. Receipts from the sale of Thanksgiving Juicy Lucy turkey burgers and cranberries go to local charities. On Nov. 11, veterans with a valid U.S. military ID get a free Juicy Lucy. Global Market events The Midtown Global Market, at 10th Avenue S. and Lake Street in Minneapolis, hosts two popular events this month. From noon to 2 p.m. Nov. 12, it's the fifth annual Global Chili Cook-Off, at which the public samples and votes for chilis prepared by Midtown chefs.
