SAN ANTONIO — A museum featuring art of the American West is to open this fall along San Antonio's River Walk.

The Briscoe Western Art Museum will open Oct. 26 and is named in honor of the late Texas Gov. Dolph Briscoe Jr. and his wife Janey.

The main museum building is housed in San Antonio's former central library. The renovation of the building built in 1930 included the restoration of many original architectural elements.

Museum Executive Director Steven M. Karr says their vision is to "create galleries that are evocative of the time and place in which the West was populated by diverse groups of people seeking land, fortune, work, and very often a new beginning."

The museum will include two buildings, a courtyard and sculpture garden.
