West news briefs: Garden guessing game will benefit food shelf

Plymouth will hold its annual "Paint the Pavement 5K" run/walk on Saturday.

The run/walk will take place at 9 a.m. at the Hilde Performance Center, 3450 Plymouth Blvd. During the race, participants will pass checkpoints where they may collaborate on a group canvas painting, creating artwork on the trail. The event is open to all runners and walkers. It costs $20 per person; free admission for children ages 9 and younger.

The Plymouth Senior Program will host an annual pie and book sale fundraiser this Wednesday.

The event runs from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Plymouth Creek Center, 14800 34th Av. N. Pies will be sold for $5 a slice and other items such as used books, scarves and wares created by the Plymouth Handycrafters will be for sale.

Proceeds will help support senior programs such as equipment and guest speakers. Donations for the event can be dropped off at the center by Wednesday, Aug. 14. For more information, call the Plymouth Creek Center at 763-509-5280.

Sunshine Factory General Manager April Hanson wants to clear up any confusion regarding the restaurant's pending move. Business will continue as usual at its New Hope location until its move to Plymouth, which is projected to happen in late November.

People who live and work in Bloomington, Edina and Richfield are invited to compete for prizes by guessing how much produce will be donated this season to VEAP, the food shelf that serves those cities.

The game runs from Aug. 1 to Oct. 15 and is intended to increase donations from community gardens and farmers markets to VEAP. Last year, gardens supported by the Statewide Health Improvement Program in Bloomington, Edina and Richfield donated 2,515 pounds of produce to VEAP. At the Bloomington Farmers Market this year, people can donate produce by putting it in green bins with a VEAP donation banner.

The Bloomington Housing and Redevelopment Authority will hold a free seminar on interior painting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Bloomington Civic Plaza Rehearsal Hall, 1800 W. Old Shakopee Road. The seminar, taught by Eric Moored of TruNorth Painting, will include tips on paint, brush and tape selection, wall preparation and techniques for painting walls, ceilings and trim. The seminar will last up to 90 minutes and include time for questions.

Summerfest, an annual fundraiser at the Burschville one-room school located 3 miles west of Corcoran on County Road 10 a quarter-mile east of Burschville, is today from noon to 4:30 p.m. The festival features old-fashioned music, the "Those Pork Chops" food wagon, face painting, school tours, kids games, door prizes and raffles.

The festival is sponsored by the North Hennepin Pioneer Society, which is trying to preserve the school as a museum.

Jaguar/Land Rover of Minneapolis is hosting a free classic car event on Saturday.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 8905 Wayzata Blvd., Golden Valley. Participants can bring their classic British cars or get a close-up of other vintage cars. The free event includes live Irish music, period costumes, photos with the classic cars, free food, ice cream and a raffle.

The Eden Prairie Human Rights and Diversity Commission and the Advocates for Human Rights are sponsoring a community conversation on Eden Prairie welcoming new residents next week.

The community event will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Eden Prairie City Center, 8080 Mitchell Rd.

The event will record stories and experiences of newcomers and immigrants and give city residents a chance to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the community. It will also contribute to the One Voice Minnesota project, "Blueprint for Welcome," an initiative by to determine what makes a welcoming community.
