It's been a pretty nice start to the season for a pair of Edina track and field athletes.

Junior hurdler Abdihafid Sahal joined the list of potential state championship contenders by posting impressive early-season times in the 110 high hurdles (14.92 seconds) and the 300 intermediate hurdles (40.05).

Sophomore Emily Kompelien broke a 10-year-old team record by running a 5:04.51 time in the 1,600 meters in a dual meet against Minneapolis Washburn.

Statement made

Waconia's Samantha Hedtke issued a preview of things to come with an standout effort at Orono's Connie Manuel Invitational track and field meet.

Hedtke, only an eighth-grader, won the discus with a throw of 113 feet, 10 inches, setting a school record, and added a victory in the shot put with a throw of 35-5.

• Minnehaha Academy pitcher Alex Fedje-Johnson pitched six innings without allowing an earned run and struck out 10 batters in a 9-2 victory over defending Class 1A champion New Life Academy.

• The Buffalo softball team, building on its 2015 state tournament appearance, began the season 7-0. A big portion of the credit goes to junior catcher Autumn Senger, who hit .478 with three home runs, two doubles and eight RBI through those games.
