Be sure to check out this weekend's travel section, when travel writer Jim Buchta writes about his recent trip to New York City.

Why the shameless plug here?

Because Jim relates a short story how a colleague -- that would be me -- alerted him to a $157 roundtrip fare to the Big Apple that I'd found for myself. But when he went searching, he couldn't find that fare. He questioned whether it was just a case of missing the sale seats or if it was the sale fare bait-and-switch tactic we see so often.

(You know: where only one seat on the plane is going for $157 roundtrip, so that they can advertise it as such.)

I rarely will write about a fare that low unless I can confirm it for myself, which is why I'm excited to find very similar fares again.

Again this week, on www.fly.com (via Travelzoo), I found sale fares starting at just $172 roundtrip to LaGuardia.

There's a lot of fine print here: You may have be flexible on some of your times, some of them aren't always direct, some itineraries use multiple airlines and, in some cases there are hidden fees that add up to nearly half the cost of the fare itself. (Which DOES qualify as a bait-and-switch, at least as far as I'm concerned).

That said, I still found more than a few roundtrip fares to the City for under $180. I say jump on that in a New York minute.

Here's the link I used to get there:

That's not the only deal in town.

United this week also continues its last-minute sale fares out of the Twin Cities: Chicago for $80 roundtrip (even hitchhiking could cost more), Vail, Colo. for $236, Allentown, Penn. $178 and more.
