The cones and barrels will be out as MnDOT repaves a portion of I-694 in Brooklyn Center and expands the lane restrictions already in place on I-35 in Lakeville down to Elko.

Highways and freeways both in and outside the metro will be busy as anglers head out for the fishing opener. The DOT is pleading with motorists to expect slow traffic and use caution in work zones.

Meanwhile the State Patrol is running a one-day DWI enforcement campaign Friday in the 25 counties (listed below) where the most drunken driving-related deaths and serious injury crashes attributed to alcohol use over the past three years.

Meteorologist Paul Douglas says the weather should be fine for Mother's Day and Sunday's 22nd annual Race for the Cure. Look for traffic disruptions near the Mall of America.

I-694 paving project

MnDOT will repaving the a portion of eastbound I-694 where it intersects with I-94 in Brooklyn Center. The closure runs from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, but this closure won't be as bad as you think.

Traffic will be diverted onto the eastbound lanes of I-94, which runs parallel to 694. Once past the work zone, drivers can either continue east (south) on 94 to Minneapolis, or return to eastbound 694.

I-35 in Lakeville and Elko

The single lane configuration on I-35 from County Road 50 to County Road 70 remains in place until May 19. This weekend, the lane restrictions will kick in at County Road 2 in Elko. The lane restrictions in Elko will run from 5 a.m. Saturday until 5 a.m. Sunday only.

Further south, be ready for lane closures in Owatonna.

Hwy. 10 in Anoka/Coon Rapids

Nightly lane closures between 6 p.m. and 5 a.m. continue as part of a resurfacing project. Look for the work between Fairoak Avenue and Hanson Boulevard.

Hwy. 169 in Edina

The long running closure of southbound Hwy. 169 continues as MnDOT replaces the overpass over the Crosstown. The highway is closed from the Crosstown to Valley View Road. Motorists are being detoured west on Hwy. 212 then east on I-494.

I-35E in St. Paul

The ramp from southbound I-35E to Victoria Street and the ramp from Victoria Street to northbound I-35E is closed until 7 p.m., Monday, June 16. The ramp closures are needed as crews route a natural gas pipeline along Victoria Street beneath the interstate.

Race for the Cure

One of the most celebrated events filled with good stories and lots of hope is the annual breast cancer research fundraiser at the Mall of America in Bloomington. Festivities begin bright and early and will draw throngs, so plan on extra time to arrive and park.

The mall is the epicenter of activity, but a 5K race will have nearby 24th Avenue, American Blvd. 12th Avenue S., 86th Street and Old Shakopee Road closed for runners from roughly 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday

Metro Transit will offer free rides to the event to those who download a free ride pass.

DWI enforcement

A DWI offense can result in loss of license for up to a year, thousands in costs and possible jail time. Repeat DWI offenders, as well as first-time offenders arrested at 0.16 and above alcohol-concentration level, must use ignition interlock in order to regain legal driving privileges or face at least one year without a driver's license. So just don't drink and drive, especially in these 25 counties where law enforcement will be watching for you. They are listed in the order where law enforcement has made the most arrests:
