Comic compositions

The Schubert Club presents cartoon-inspired vocal pieces by Minneapolis composer Libby Larsen, one of few to take inspiration from the world of comics. Projected drawings accompany pieces such as "The Fantom of the Fair," "The Peculiar Case of Dr. H.H. Holmes" and "Love Tamer," with soloists including distinguished baritone Aaron Engebreth. (6 p.m. & 8:30 p.m. Thu., Twin Cities Public Television, St. Paul, $30, 651-292-3268 or schubert.org)

Fresh serving of Haydn

A big treat for Twin Cities classical fans over the past few years has been the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra's stimulating performances of Haydn's symphonies. Next up is No. 49, "La Passione," in a concert also including Mendelssohn's bright, zippy Italian Symphony and "O Mikros, O Megas" by George Tsontakis (commissioned by the SPCO in 2016). All three works are performed without a conductor, giving the SPCO's outstanding players plenty of leeway for expression. (11 a.m. & 8 p.m. Fri., Wooddale Church, Eden Prairie; 8 p.m. Sat., Ordway Concert Hall, St. Paul; Tue. Jan. 30, Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, Apple Valley, $11-$50, 651-291-1144 or thespco.org)

Another Finnish sensation

Pianist Juho Pohjonen is steadily building a reputation as one of the more exciting players on the international circuit. His recital for the Frederic Chopin Society pairs works by Bach, Franck and Mozart with Schubert's formidable "Wanderer" fantasy in what promises to be a riveting Minnesota debut. (3 p.m. Sun., Mairs Concert Hall, Macalester College, St. Paul; $30, 612-822-0123 or chopinsocietymn.org)

For the Love of Bass

This concert explores the immensely rich repertoire for baroque stringed instruments other than the violin, with a selection of solos, duets and trios by Telemann, J.S. Bach, Ortiz, Marais, Frescobaldi and Selma. Featured instruments include the lirone, bass viol and piccolo cello. (8 p.m. Sat., the Baroque Room, St. Paul; $7-$15, thebaroqueroom.com)

'Peter Rabbit' and 'Mother Goose'

Peter Child's "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" serves as the centerpiece for this year's Chamber Music Society of Minnesota family concert. A crack team of instrumentalists joins narrator Maria Jette and the Edina Children's Choir for a program that also includes Ravel's charming "Mother Goose Suite." (4 p.m. Sun., Sundin Music Hall, Hamline University, St. Paul; $20-$25, 651-450-0527 or chamber musicmn.org)
