Wind gusts of around 60 miles per hour were recorded Sunday as a fast-moving storm moved scattershot through the metro area. Wind speed of 58 mph is considered severe.

The National Weather Service in Chanhassen received reports of scattered damage around the metro area — an uprooted tree in Plymouth, a large branch down in Chanhassen and other such damage, said meteorologist Bill Borghoff.

The wind developed because the ground was dry and light rain evaporated near the surface, Borghoff said.

The evaporation cooled the air, causing it to sink to the ground, which created the wind, he said. Laurie Blake
