A homicide at a Maple Grove rest area early Wednesday led to a police chase along I-694 that ended when the suspect crashed and was killed by officers after brandishing weapon, authorities said.

Authorities have opened the westbound lanes of I 694 at 35E in Little Canada but eastbound lanes remain closed between I-35W and I-35E as they investigate the scene.

The closure resulted in major traffic snarls for commuters on southbound I-35W from Blaine to Roseville. Westbound Hwy. 36 also saw heavier levels of traffic as commuters used alternate routes.

Maple Grove Police responded to a report of a shooting at a rest area on eastbound I-94 near Weaver Lake Road around 1 a.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, officers found a man who was pronounced dead at the scene, the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office said.

Minutes later the suspect was spotted in an SUV near the I-694/494/94 split and officers attempted to make a stop. The suspect sped away on eastbound 694.

According to scanner reports, officers from several agencies and a State Patrol helicopter joined the chase as the suspect moved east across the Mississippi River. As the suspect approached Snelling Avenue, speeds reached 115 miles per hour.

The driver, who was alone in the car, crashed into the center cable median barrier. The suspect got out of the vehicle and brandished a weapon at officers, who shot the suspect. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff's office said.

A Hennepin County Sheriff's deputy and Brooklyn Center Police officer fired their weapons during the incident.

The Maple Grove Police Department is investigating the apparent homicide in their city. The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the officer involved shooting.
