Even the loss of two of its top performers couldn't keep Wayzata from winning its eighth consecutive synchronized swimming state championship. Despite having to replace 2013 stalwarts Amanda Uhrke, lost to the U.S. national team, and Haley Ruegemer, who left for speed swimming, the Trojans' depth carried them to a comfortable victory Friday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Wayzata finished with 137 points, while Stillwater was second with 94.
Sophomore Colleen Donlin paced the Trojans by dominating figures competition and winning the long solo event. Senior Trisha Morrison, junior Katrin Ree and sophomore Lucy Liu made up the winning extended trio and joined Donlin, Hannah Ogren and Lydia Boike on the winning extended team.
"I was a little nervous because the Wayzata girls' swimming and the boys' swimming team won state championships this year," said Wayzata coach Signe Hensel. "We had to hold up our end."
St. Louis Park senior Rose Evensen won the extended solo and extended duet events, helping the Orioles take third place.
