The world is mourning the death of music legend and Minnesota native Prince, 57, at his Paisley Park compound in Chanhassen, Minn.

Born Prince Rogers Nelson in Minneapolis, he was notoriously opposed to the unauthorized distribution of his music online and his lawyers were well known for issuing takedown notices to anyone posting his work on YouTube and other sites. Still, a handful of his live performances survived online, usually because he did not own the copyright. Here are some of the best live Prince videos available on the internet.

1983: "Purple Rain" debut at First Avenue, Minneapolis

Here is the first-ever performance of "Purple Rain," complete with a third verse that was cut from the album version, recorded at the Minneapolis rock club that his movie, also titled "Purple Rain," would make famous.

March 15, 2004: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, New York City

Prince was primarily known as a singer, but he was also an incredible multi-instrumentalist. At the 2004 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel, an all-star lineup of rock royalty — including Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne and others — paid tribute to George Harrison with a performance of the Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," capped by an extended, face-melting guitar solo by Prince.

April 26, 2008: Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Indio, Calif.

In the near pitch-black darkness, Prince and his band performed a slow, haunting cover of Radiohead's 1993 hit, "Creep," once again ending with a shredding guitar solo. Prince famously fought to keep this video offline, but relented after Radiohead asserted its copyright ownership and called for it to be made available.

Feb. 4, 2007: Super Bowl XLI, Miami

As the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears took a break from the game at Sun Life Stadium, Prince delivered one of the best Super Bowl halftime performances ever. The setlist included "Let's Go Crazy," "All Along the Watchtower," and "Proud Mary," but it was his rendition of "Purple Rain" as rain poured on the stage that really brought down the house. Unfortunately, the highest quality version of the performance can be found in this NFL-produced documentary on the show, for which the league has disabled embedding. Here's a lower-resolution, but more complete, version.

Dec. 18, 1999: Rave Un2U Concert, Paisley Park

Prince recorded this concert at his home, studio and concert space in Chanhassen for a pay-per-view broadcast on New Year's Eve 1999. It featured numerous covers and a guest appearance by Lenny Kravitz on a cover of the Guess Who's "American Woman."

2016: Piano & Microphone tour

Prince changed the format of his live shows earlier this year, opting for a sparse, intimate stage featuring a purple grand piano instead of a full backing band. Here's a clip of Prince performing "Purple Rain" and "K.I.S.S." posted by a fan from an unnamed show.

1983: Beverly Theater, Hollywood

Michael Jackson, James Brown, and Prince on guitar, laying down the funk. 'Nuff said.

Feb. 7, 2011: Madison Square Garden, New York City

Prince again picked up his axe and added some funky licks to Cee-Lo Green's performance of his megahit, "Crazy."

March 24, 2011: Time Warner Cable Arena, Charlotte, N.C.

Of all of the acts connected to Prince, The Time was perhaps the most well known, with their lead singer, Morris Day, appearing as the antagonist in "Purple Rain." Prince occasionally covered their songs at his concerts. Here he is performing "Cool."

Jan. 30, 1982: Capitol Theatre, Passaic, N.J.

Still craving more? A lot more? Here's a full concert.

Finally, it's not exactly live, but here's Prince's appearance on an episode of Disney's "Muppets Tonight" from the 1990s. Skip ahead to the 5:25 mark to see him sing a simple song about breakfast foods called "Starfish and Coffee."
