Data analytics is becoming more vital for businesses, and data scientists are in high demand. But the emerging field is broad, and some companies say they have struggled to find job candidates whose skills fit their needs.
To better define the tools their employees need to properly analyze big data, executives from eight companies have created a data science standards board. The companies, which include the New York Times and Spotify, plan to establish a standardized test for job applicants.
Eventually, companies across industries could use the test, executives involved in creating the board said. They equated it to a bar exam or certified public accountant test for data professionals. But one expert cautioned that the companies could miss out on top-notch employees if the standardized testing isn’t done right.
Each company could use the test differently, said Mainak Mazumdar, chief research officer at Nielsen, which uses data to analyze consumer behavior. Some might use it during the recruiting process or to gauge the skill level of incoming employees.
Nielsen plans to evaluate the test when it’s completed, which could be later this year. The U.K.-based company, best known for tracking television ratings, is expanding its data team globally. Mazumdar said the test could easily be used across the company when hiring for the team.
“I spend 30 percent of my time on talent,” Mazumdar said. Having a standardized test to help identify qualified applicants could streamline the hiring process for Nielsen and other companies.
At Booz Allen Hamilton, more than 800 employees are working to wrangle data, and that’s not enough, said Patrick McCreesh, director of digital and analytics strategy. The Virginia-based consulting firm has been training its current employees to become data scientists, with a goal of creating more than 5,000 from its existing workforce in the next five years, McCreesh said. The standardized test will signal to Booz Allen whether its incoming workers are ready to be data scientists. If they’re not, the company will know what training they need.
General Assembly, a private, for-profit company that offers boot camps in coding, data science and other disciplines, assembled the new data science standards board and is working with the companies to establish the standardized test.
The number of data and analytics positions in the U.S. could exceed 2.7 million by 2020, according to a report IBM released last year. Companies are hungry for data talent, and candidates are scrambling to snatch up those jobs, said Kieran Luke, general manager of credentials at New York-based General Assembly. But not all those candidates are being educated in the same way or have the same skills.
Some candidates might be Excel gurus who dubbed themselves data scientists on their resumes to increase marketability, Luke said. Others may have worked at NASA. Some may have a four-year degree in computer science, while others may have learned their data skills at a boot camp. One goal with the standards board and test is to better define the skills needed for different data roles.
The standardized test won’t be tailored to the curriculum of General Assembly’s data science boot camp, Luke said. Companies will help contribute to the content. The standards board also plans to create free rubrics and study guides for test takers.
