Well after a long weekend of fishing I just want to tell people that the bite is going to be getting good the next few weeks. We are starting to hear reports from different lakes that are starting to go. What do I mean by starting to go? Well the water temperatures are hitting the 55 to 60 degree mark, the cabbage is really starting to grow and the shiners have moved up shallow. With that the walleyes usually start to bite and this past weekend was proof of that.
With Chad Thorneberg and Bernie Cullen in the boat we went out to give it our best shot and we got into some nice fish. Chad boating numerous fish over the 20 inch mark, including his personal best a 27 and 1/4 inch walleye weighing a fat 7 pounds 8 ounces. Bernie was also on a roll catching many of the eater size fish ( 15 to 18 inch fish) and also netting a 24 inch walleye, which I believe was close to his personal best.
What were we focusing on you might ask? Well we were looking for structure that had both cabbage and rocks on the same spot, The fish really seemed to be holding tight to any structure that they could find. With the new green cabbage weeds giving them a great place to ambush bait fish. We concentrated on depths between 14 and 18 feet of water on steep break lines. We used both Lindy rigs and jigs to help net our fish. All the fish still seemed to be biting on minnows, with the temperatures warming, I feel that there will be a switch over in the near future to crawlers and leeches. My advice for people is to invest in a lake map of the lake and look for deep drop offs where the fish can move into the shallows and feed on shiners and other minnows. Then look for spots where their could be a good cabbage bed or rocks and you should be in business.
