Spring hiking on the North Shore is nigh, and there is work to be done on one of its esteemed trails.

Volunteers help prepare and maintain miles of the Superior Hiking Trail for use. Several work weekends are planned.

"Every winter, snow, ice and wind contribute to fallen trees and drooping brush, which make the Superior Hiking Trail extremely difficult to follow," said Jo Swanson, Superior Hiking Trail Association outreach coordinator. "Without the help of volunteers, we couldn't keep the trail open. Last spring, more than 1,800 volunteer hours went into clearing the trail for the spring hiking season."

Swanson said the volunteer rosters are almost full for the work weekends. Tools and safety items are provided. The next available work weekend is May 13-14 in the Finland area, and the second May 27-29 in Grand Marais. Volunteers can work one day or all days. There also will be volunteers needed June 3-4 for a reroute of the trail north of Gooseberry Falls.

The Superior Hiking Trail courses more than 300 miles from Carlton to the border with Canada.
