Minnesota Modern: Four Artists of the Twentieth Century

Opening Saturday: This exhibition revisits the impressive careers of four well-trained talents who exerted a lasting influence on Minnesota's art scene. All were versatile types who adapted their bold colors, expressive gestures and modernist styles to typical Minnesota subjects as well as imaginative abstractions. Clement Haupers, a St. Paul native whose vivacious dancers are shown here, helped launch what is now the State Arts Board. Swedish-born Elof Wedin supported himself as a boilermaker while exhibiting his vivid paintings throughout the country. Minneapolis native Dewey Albinson and Cameron Booth, originally from Pennsylvania, were teachers. In a reprise of their influential careers, the new show features about 10 paintings by each artist. St. Paul-based Afton Press will sum up their careers in a book of the same title, due in March. (10 a.m.-4 p.m. Mon.-Sat., 1-4 p.m. Sun. Ends March 22, $9 adults including house tour; $2 art gallery only. James J. Hill House, 240 Summit Av., St. Paul. 651-297-2555 or hillhouse@mnhs.org)
