Vikings assistant defensive backs coach Derek Mason has accepted a job as secondary coach at Stanford. The National Football Post first reported the move and it has been confirmed.
Mason spent three seasons with the Vikings, helping defensive backs coach Joe Woods. Mason spent most of his coaching career at the college level, including stints at Ohio University, New Mexico State and University of Utah.
Also, Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe did an interview with Sirius NFL radio and was asked about the shots quarterback Brett Favre took from the New Orleans Saints in the NFC Championship game. Saints defensive coordinator Greg Williams described them as "remember me" hits during the Super Bowl.
Here was Shiancoe's response, according to a transcript provided by Sirius:
"Yeah, well, obviously there were some controversial shots made on Brett that were definitely just obviously unnecessary," he said. "And it was obvious that it was blatant, that it was meant to be like that. We’re like a small fraternity. Just like the Cowboys got pretty upset with us when we scored that last touchdown because I guess they thought that it was disrespectful [to] the code of conduct basically.
"When you’ve got teams like that and defensive coordinators saying those types of things publicly it just creates a little turmoil, I feel, a little animosity. So it all depends on who it is placed upon and how they react to it, man, but we didn’t like that too much, of course. Especially being that it was Brett, it’s unnecessary hits and a little bit of extra. So, you know, we play these guys again [next season]. It might be a little bit extra out there.”
Shiancoe was asked about Ray Edwards comments last week that he would have done something to the Saints if he had known what was happening.
"Yeah, exactly," Shiancoe said. "That’s what I’m trying to tell you, is that I didn’t know it was going on because usually I was in a route or stuff like that. But after the game when I seen all that definitely I probably would have said something to our defense. And, like, that’s the truth. I would have said something to our defense about it and it would have been damn chaos out there. It would have been a war out there.”
