The Traveler: Shirley Saathoff of Alexandria, Minn.

The scene: Red-rock cliffs dwarf a ranch and a horse along Chief Joseph Highway in Wyoming.

The Trip: In mid-June, Saathoff and her husband, Daryl, took a road trip on their Harley-Davidson trike with friends. The group started in Medora, N.D., passed through Theodore Roosevelt National Park and headed to Glacier National Park in Montana, not knowing if the scenic Going-to-the-Sun Road and its highest point, Logan Pass, were open. "To our delight, the road opened on Friday and our plans were to ride through on Sunday," Saathoff wrote in an e-mail. "The ride was awesome, just breathtaking. (Crossed that off the bucket list.)" They continued to Cody, Wyo., rode on the Chief Joseph Highway and went through the Bighorn Mountains before heading home to Minnesota.

How I got this shot: Riding on the back of the trike, Saathoff keeps her camera tucked into her jacket for "taking pictures on the go, blur reduction always on." She snapped this photo for the view. Not until after the ride, when she zoomed in on the picture, did she see the horse in the meadow.

The Equipment: Saathoff says her small Nikon Coolpix is "easy to operate with one hand while riding on the back of the Harley, going 70+ m.p.h."
