A family confronts dementia

In "What They Had" (⋆⋆½; R), Elizabeth Chomko offers a sensitive, naturalistic drama about intergenerational conflicts around a parent with Alzheimer's. After Ruth (Blythe Danner) wanders off during a Chicago blizzard, her children, Bridget (Hilary Swank) and Nicky (Michael Shannon), gather with Bridget's daughter, Emma (Taissa Farmiga), to decide next steps. The children are at odds with their father, Bert (Robert Forster), who refuses to move his wife into memory care.
