Update: NFL sources continue to say that Albert Haynesworth to the Vikings isn't going to happen. It is interesting that Washington had paid him $32 million, including a $21 million bonus earlier this month. That means Haynesworth is set to earn about $16 million over the next three years.

A reader who follows us on Twitter posted something interesting this morning, indicating ESPN's John Clayton had mentioned that the Vikings had contacted the Redskins about disgruntled defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.

Haynesworth, signed to a monster free-agent contract before last season, definitely wants out of Washington and it sounds as if new coach Mike Shanahan would like to accommodate him. Haynesworth has said he will not participate in offseason workouts because he's unhappy about the prospect of playing the nose in the Redskins' newly installed 3-4 defense.

Teams that have been mentioned in connection with Haynesworth include the Lions, Raiders and Titans. Haynesworth was a Pro Bowl player with Tennessee before landing a seven-year, $100 million contract in Washington. In Detroit he would stand to be reunited with coach Jim Schwartz, who was the Titans defensive coordinator. Schwartz already has landed free-agent defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch, another former Titan.

But the Lions are expected to take Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamakong Suh with the second pick in tonight's draft.

It's unclear if the Vikings would be serious bidders for Haynesworth or if these have just been casual pre-draft conversations. Minnesota already has a Pro Bowl defensive tackle in Kevin Williams. Nose tackle Pat Williams will turn 38 in late October and is entering the last season of his contract so the Vikings could be looking for insurance at that spot.

Haynesworth, though, was the 3-technique in the Redskins' 4-3 defense in 2009. The 3-technique is the position that Williams plays for the Vikings.

NFL sources have indicated they have not heard anything about Haynesworth possibly going to the Vikings, but as the day continues to unfold (can we get this draft going already) the Haynesworth speculation might be worth at least keeping an eye on.

As for what the Vikings would give up, that's a good question. Certainly a draft pick would have to come into play.

By the way, new Vikings cornerback Lito Sheppard will talk to the local media at 3 p.m. this afternoon. We'll blog his thoughts.
