An apparent stunt gone awry sent a 19-year-old University of Minnesota student falling from a fifth-floor apartment balcony on the edge of campus over the weekend, police said Monday.

Police spokeswoman Sgt. Catherine Michal said the young man, identified Monday night by authorities as Mackenzie J. Caron, has so far survived his injuries from the incident, which was reported to law enforcement authorities shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday at the FloCo Fusion apartments in the 1000 block of University Avenue SE., just east of Interstate 35W.

Caron, who lives in the building but not in the apartment associated with the incident, was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition late Monday.

Initial emergency dispatch communication noted that Caron "was apparently trying to do some kind of stunt and missed. ... A couple of people stated that he did this intentionally."

A couple of minutes later, another dispatcher said "he did a flip and missed. Sounds like he was just screwing around."

Claire Steffenhagen told the university's student newspaper that she was walking by FloCo, saw the man on his stomach on the concrete and looked up to see people on a packed balcony above looking down.
