Tyrus Thompson was asked what position best suits him along the offensive line.

"Offensive line," Thompson responded with a smile.

Good answer, rookie.

The offensive tackle was used at the first-team right guard during the first day of minicamp on Tuesday. He was exclusively an offensive tackle at Oklahoma and never played guard up until Vikings rookie minicamp last month when he was thrown in at left guard.

The Vikings used Thompson as the backup left tackle early in OTAs, During the final OTA last Thursday, which was open to the media, the Vikings mixed him in at first-team right guard. He said the biggest adjustment has been the immediate contact at guard with a defensive lineman after the snap.

"In the inside, those guys are right there on you already," Thompson said. "It's just a matter of knowing what to expect to happen versus on the outside. The guys are faster on the outside, but you have a little bit more space when you're kicking off the ball instead of being flatter to keep the pocket more shallow."

You probably shouldn't read too much into it this early in the offseason that Thompson has played with the first team at right guard. That starting spot is the biggest question on offense leading up to training camp and the team has three young options, Thompson, David Yankey and T.J. Clemmings, along with an 11-year veteran, Joe Berger, to work with. They've used the early portion of the offseason to mix these players in at different positions to see how they're capable of performing.

"I think it's a great opportunity for me right now at that right guard spot especially trying to get on the field right now as a rookie on top of that," Thompson said.
