ABOUT THE TWINS

Joe Mauer went 0-for-4 with a walk Thursday, lowering his batting average to .321. Detroit's Miguel Cabrera went 1-for-4 against Oakland, keeping his AL-leading average at .333. Now those two will face each other's teams in six of the next nine games. Mauer won batting titles in 2006, 2008 and 2009. Cabrera won last year's batting title, at .344.

ABOUT THE TIGERS

Max Scherzer was scheduled to pitch Sunday's series finale before coming down with right shoulder inflammation Tuesday. He's still hoping to start, but Detroit likely will be cautious, using lefthander Drew Smyly in Scherzer's place. Justin Verlander pitched Wednesday, so the Twins will miss him in this series.
