Big Martin's house

Martin Lawrence isn't quite ready to cede ground to Kevin Hart just yet. The comic, who once juggled TV, movies and stand-up better than anyone, hasn't made much noise in any field recently, but "Doin' Time: Uncut" could constitute a comeback. It's his first stand-up special in 14 years.

The house that built her

Miranda Lambert received the inaugural Merle Haggard Spirit Award at the "10th Annual ACM Awards" taped last month at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. The singer also picked up honors as best female vocalist for the seventh year in a row, which should have made it easier to deal with her ex, Blake Shelton, opening the show.

Animation domination

Pity Cheryl Hines. After years of putting up with Larry David on "Curb Your Enthusiasm," she's now saddled with an even bigger pain: a sword-wielding warrior (Jason Sudeikis) who also happens to be animated. In "Son of Zorn," the cartoon daddy tries to adjust to suburban life — and the fact that his live-action family doesn't appreciate his barbaric ways. The novel approach should attract eyeballs, but there's little here to suggest Zorn should settle in for anything more than a layover.

A private war

Michael Gambon's portrayal of Winston Churchill in "Churchill's Secret" doesn't have the ferocity that Albert Finney brought to the role for 2002's "The Gathering Storm," but he helps shed light on a little-reported chapter of the British prime minister's life, when he battled a severe stroke during his second term. Lindsay Duncan stands out as the legend's wife, who's more than a little sick and tired of "buggering on."
