I love rock 'n' roll
Most Midwesterners have never heard of WLIR 92.7, but the music heralded by the long-defunct station is definitely familiar. "New Wave: Dare to Be Different" looks back at the rebel DJs who championed U2, Joan Jett and Blondie long before the rest of the country got wise. Even if you're not a history buff, you'll get a kick out of revisiting cheesy 1980s videos.

Dream a little dream
Daydreaming becomes a reliable source of therapy in the wonderfully imaginative new series "The Dangerous Book for Boys," co-created by "Breaking Bad" star Bryan Cranston. Gabriel Bateman is charming as the youngster who revisits his late father through fantastical adventures that could have been choreographed by Roald Dahl.

A time to cry
Diehard fans of Benedict Cumberbatch may have a hard time watching their idol slip on his mopey cape in "The Child in Time," a "Masterpiece" production about a couple struggling to reconnect after their daughter disappears. But watching the Oscar nominee grieve opposite Emmy winner Kelly Macdonald is a study in great, subtle acting, even when the plot gets as mystical as anything in Doctor Strange's arsenal.

What's the buzz
Andrew Lloyd Webber's most stripped-down blockbuster, "Jesus Christ Superstar Live!" is tailor-made for a live TV production, but it places extra scrutiny on the singers. John Legend, Sara Bareilles and Alice Cooper are the most notable cast members, but the show's impact will largely rest on Broadway veteran Brandon Victor Dixon in the pivotal role of Judas.
