Raising her voice

Don't be surprised if "Rachel Carson," a new documentary about the author of the environmental-movement landmark "Silent Spring," inspires a major Hollywood biopic. Her story — a secret lesbian affair, backlash from the establishment, a battle with a terminal disease at the height of her popularity — practically screams Oscar. As for leading ladies, usher Mary-Louise Parker to the front of the line, if only on the basis of how eloquently she reads the author's personal letters in this eye-opening film in PBS' "American Experience" series.

Life hasn't gotten any easier for the fictional Farrell clan in "The Outsiders," which returns for a second season. Producers for this Appalachian version of "Sons of Anarchy" include Paul Giamatti and Dudley Riggs veteran Peter Tolan.

Cool it now

It's usually wise to steer clear of biopics produced by the figures beings profiled. But "The New Edition Story," a six-hour miniseries, doesn't suffer from the behind-the-scenes participation of its members. It's clear that Bobby Brown and company allowed director Chris Robinson and his fresh, energetic cast to go all out in presenting a warts-and-all portrait of the influential R&B group. The film continues Wednesday and Thursday.
