Desperate for laughs
There may be three too many shows about stand-up comedians, but I'm more than grateful that "Crashing" is back for a second season. Pete Holmes, playing a rough version of himself, hasn't reached the A-list yet, a blessing since life at the bottom of the barrel means a shaming by Dr. Oz and verbal abuse from Bill Burr. You don't have to be a comedy-club regular to rally behind his lovable underdog.

James Baldwin is rightly celebrated as a writer, but his effectiveness as a public speaker is on full display in the Oscar-nominated documentary "I Am Not Your Negro," directed by Raoul Peck. Samuel L. Jackson does a superb job of reading passages from Baldwin's books, but nothing packs the emotional wallop of watching a fired-up Baldwin speak his own words.

Finding gold
A lot of British sitcoms are designed to make viewers squirm in their couches. "Detectorists," now in its third and last season, is different. Creator Mackenzie Crook and Toby Jones play lovable losers hoping to strike gold through metal detectors and sheer stubbornness. If you're looking for buried treasure, start digging here.
