Games people play

Cable TV networks dedicated to sports usually cram their airwaves with live games. But some fictional films are just too rich to resist. The showdown between 1977's "Slap Shot," with Paul Newman, and 1996's "Tin Cup," with Kevin Costner, should be the most irresistible matchup of the night.

Rock 'n' roll will never die

Even non-fans of big-hair rock will flick their lighters for "Eagles of Death Metal: Nos Amis," a documentary about the band that was on stage at a Paris nightclub when it was attacked in a November 2015 massacre. Director Colin Hanks interviews the musicians with great sensitivity, taking them through their roots, rise and return to France after escaping with their lives. Bono and the Edge lend gravitas to the proceedings.

Love is all around

In the hours after Mary Tyler Moore's death, I mentioned a terrific PBS 2015 documentary several times, prompting many callers to wonder when they could catch it. While TPT has aired it a few times since her death, this prime-time airing of "Mary Tyler Moore: A Celebration" is probably the most convenient.

9:15 p.m., TPT, Ch. 2
