Rock and roll never forgets

Bob Seger probably isn't on the shortlist for the American arts world's most exclusive club, but after watching him attack "Heartache Tonight" near the end of "The 39th Annual Kennedy Center Honors," maybe he should be. The rocker's salute to the Eagles steals a show that also celebrates the work of James Taylor, Mavis Staples, Al Pacino and Martha Argerich. One question that kept gnawing at me during the taped broadcast: How in the world did Gayle King and Trevor Noah score primo seats right behind the first family?

The master builder

"Eero Saarinen: The Architect Who Saw the Future" shines light on an innovator who has never gotten his due, largely because he passed away before his most famous structure, the St. Louis Gateway Arch, was completed. Director Peter Rosen, who previously helmed an "American Masters" tribute to Garrison Keillor, gets a mighty assist from photographer Eric Saarinen, the architect's son, in this documentary that also shows the planning of the TWA Flight Center at JFK Airport and the General Motors Technical Center in Michigan.

Leaving home

"Frontline" closes another top-notch season of investigative journalism with "Exodus," a collection of stories from refugees and immigrants who escaped from 26 countries in hopes of a better, safer life. The episode relies heavily on firsthand accounts and cellphone footage.
