"Walking Dead" star Andrew Lincoln narrates "How Sherlock Changed the World" (8 p.m., TPT, Ch. 2), a look at how reclusive detective Sherlock Holmes managed to make things more elementary for future generations of real-life criminal investigators. The piece also serves as a promotional tool for the brilliant "Sherlock," which returns to PBS on Jan. 14.

Keeping it real

"Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel" (9 p.m., HBO), the gift that keeps on giving throughout the year, looks back at its 19th season. The round-table discussion with some of TV's best correspondents includes thoughts on surfer Kelly Slater, the role of Ultra soccer fans in Egypt's revolution and where Gumbel buys those fantastic ties.

If Barbara Walters is truly planning on retirement next year, she's trying to make the most of it before she goes. The 84-year-old legend is everywhere these days, including "The Late Show With David Letterman" (10:35 p.m., WCCO, Ch. 4), where she'll handle the top 10 list.
