Hard to believe that the first "MTV Video Music Awards" were hosted 32 years ago by Dan Aykroyd and Bette Midler, two figures who have about as much to do with pop videos as Nelson Mandela. Rihanna, who wasn't even born then, will receive the Vanguard Award with performances from Future, Nick Jonas and Britney Spears.

About last night

Eight episodes focused on a single murder case may seem excessive, but the finale of "The Night Of" seems to be upon us all too quickly, with lots of questions begging to be addressed in the 95-minute capper. It's hard to believe producers will satisfy die-hard fans, but the first season of "True Detective" had an unsatisfactory conclusion and still managed to resonate.
