Woman of Steel

Since earning an Oscar nomination for her work in "Lady Bird," Laurie Metcalf has been a key member of the blockbuster reboot of "Roseanne" and is currently on Broadway opposite Glenda Jackson in "Three Tall Women." But she still has time for caped crusaders. The busy bee brings her super-charm to "Supergirl," guest-starring as Winn's guilt-ridden mother. As if that weren't enough: Minneapolis native Carl Lumbly warbles a karaoke version of "Suspicious Minds."

Olivia's real-life crusade

Mariska Hargitay puts her "Law & Order: SVU" fame to good use in "I Am Evidence," a new documentary that chastises the many police departments that have all but ignored thousands of rape kits containing crucial DNA evidence. Despite her star power, producer Hargitay wisely steps back and lets victims take the spotlight.

7 p.m., HBO

Mind of a murderer

The six-part docuseries "It Was Him: The Many Murders of Ed Edwards" is as much about the confessions of a serial killer as it is about former detective John Cameron's insistence that the late criminal was responsible for everything from the Zodiac murders to the death of young JonBenét Ramsey. Edwards' grandson, Wayne Wolfe, tags along in this most chilling of cold cases.
