Heavy rain in southern Tunisia lead tofloods that killed 17 people and injured eight others in the town of Redeyef.Several others are reported missing.
Flood waters reportedly reached more than 6 feet high in certain areas and wereintense enough to carry people away, according to an article in AfricaNews.
Redeyef is a phosphate mining town in the North African nation and is locatedin a semi-arid region, where heavy rain is rare. According to the AFP, many ofthe victims died because the roofs and walls of their homes collapsed.
Harsh weather is expected to continue into Friday, and winds are expected toexceed 60 mph.
Tunis Afrique Presse News Agency reports that Tunisian President Zine ElAbidine Ben Ali has dispatched two planeloads of aid, consisting of food andblankets, to Redeyef.
The Tunisian minister of equipment is expected to visit the town to assess thedamage. Field efforts are also under way to remove mudslides and other cleaningefforts.
